It was founded in 1862 as Hartley Institution and in 1952 it received University status. Besides being recognised as one of the leading research universities in the UK, Southampton has also achieved consistently high scores for its teaching and learning activities.

Dr. Stephen Gabriel
Dr. Stephen Gabriel is the Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. Before joining the university he held various positions in the space industry at various places including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and British Aerospace Space Systems (now Airbus Defence and Space), working on space propulsion and space environments. He has more than 30 years of experience in electric propulsion with expertise in gridded ion engines, hollow cathodes, magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters, pulsed plasma thrusters and spacecraft plasma interactions.
